“The Old Rugged Cross” by George Bennard

“The Old Rugged Cross” is a popular gospel hymn written by American evangelist George Bennard between 1912-13. Famed American gospel composer, Charles H. Gabriel, contributed harmonies.

Performed in 6/8 time at a moderately slow tempo, the hymn pays adoration to Christ and his sacrifice at Calvary, where he was crucified. Some of the lyrics are of a dark nature (“the emblem of suffering and shame”), but the uplifting chord structure and later lyrics (“where His glory forever I’ll share”) end the hymn on a positive note.
