Your Free Sheet Music for June 2022 – ‘Light My Fire’ by The Doors

Originally recorded August 1966 and released January 1967 on their self-titled debut album, ‘Light My Fire’ by The Doors is widely considered their greatest song. Combining a wealth of influences, from rock and psychedelia to free-form jazz, the song is memorable for its distinctive organ riff, Jim Morrison’s cryptic vocals, and captivating extended coda that pushes the track length past 7 minutes.

Here are some fun facts about Light My Fire by The Doors:

  • At the reluctance of the band, an edited single of the song was released for AM radio airplay. This version cut down the song to under 3 minutes and almost entirely removed the instrumental break.
  • The extended instrumental break has the same chord progression as American jazz saxophonist John Coltrane’s version of ‘My Favorite Things,’ an intentional homage to the pioneering artist.
  • In 2004 and 2010, the song was ranked number 35 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and then re-ranked to number 310 on the 2021 list.
  • Composed by lead guitarist Robby Krieger in early 1966, he has said that he was inspired by the lead melody of ‘Hey Joe’ and the lyrics of the Rolling Stone’s ‘Play With Fire.’
  • The 40th anniversary re-release of The Door’s self-titled debut includes a new stereo mix and speed-corrected version of the song. Previously, the song had mistakenly been released at a slower speed discrepancy of 3.5 percent.
