Reach Out, I’ll Be There was originally recorded by the Four Tops in 1966. The song was written and produced by Holland–Dozier–Holland, the trio that helped define the Motown sound of the 1960s. This version was recorded by Diana Ross in 1971 from the album Surrender.

The song alternates keys: minor in the verse and major in the chorus. Lamont Dozier said that he wrote the song this way to help convey “a journey of emotions with sustained tension, like a bolero.”
