Fun facts about Sea Shanties:

  • Shanties were songs traditionally sung by sailors as they worked aboard merchant ships. They can be traced back to the mid-19th century.
  • The Wellerman tells the story of New Zealand sailors hunting a whale and awaiting provisions.
  • This traditional New Zealand folk song was sung aboard ships owned by the Weller Brothers of Sydney, who supplied provisions to the New Zealand shore starting in 1833.

  • The song was first recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1967. It was a hit on the U.K. charts, but did not initially perform well in the United States because the record heads did not like it or want to promote the song.
  • What a Wonderful World gained more popularity in the U.S. when it was re-released in 1988 when it was used in the movie Good Morning, Vietnam.
  • The iconic song has been recorded by countless artists and is known today as a timeless standard.
