• The melody for ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ is based on ‘Plaisir d’amour,’ a popular French song by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini.

• Throughout the late 60s and 70s, Elvis concluded most of his live shows with the song. It was also the last song he ever performed live in Indianapolis at Market Square Arena on 26 June 1977.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ the 5th best Elvis song of all time, and it was ranked the 50th most popular wedding song by Billboard magazine.

• Written in the key of D major, this piano version of ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ has a 4/4-time signature and a tempo of 65 BPM.

• Originally the song was written from the perspective of a woman as ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love With Him’ but was later changed. Despite this change, the first and third line end on “in” and “sin” instead of rhyming with “you.”

Combining a wealth of influences, from rock and psychedelia to free-form jazz, the song is memorable for its distinctive organ riff, Jim Morrison’s cryptic vocals, and captivating extended coda that pushes the track length past 7 minutes.

Here are some fun facts about Light My Fire by The Doors:

  • At the reluctance of the band, an edited single of the song was released for AM radio airplay. This version cut down the song to under 3 minutes and almost entirely removed the instrumental break.
  • The extended instrumental break has the same chord progression as American jazz saxophonist John Coltrane’s version of ‘My Favorite Things,’ an intentional homage to the pioneering artist.
  • In 2004 and 2010, the song was ranked number 35 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and then re-ranked to number 310 on the 2021 list.
  • Composed by lead guitarist Robby Krieger in early 1966, he has said that he was inspired by the lead melody of ‘Hey Joe’ and the lyrics of the Rolling Stone’s ‘Play With Fire.’
  • The 40th anniversary re-release of The Door’s self-titled debut includes a new stereo mix and speed-corrected version of the song. Previously, the song had mistakenly been released at a slower speed discrepancy of 3.5 percent.
