Moon River won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It also won two Grammys in 1962 for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
The song lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer, and were inspired by his hometown of Savannah, Georgia.
During production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Paramount executive Martin Rackin suggested cutting the song from the film—leading to Audrey Hepburn’s famous response, “over my dead body!”
